Every driver on Texas roadways understand that accidents can happen in the blink of an eye regardless of how carefully they’re driving and how defensively they’re driving. Unfortunately, not everyone who takes to the roadways does so in a safe manner. Two of the most common causes of accidents are drunk drivers and distracted drivers. Unfortunately, in too many cases, they not only cause injuries to themselves but to others on the road.
Common signs of distracted driving
Drivers who are distracted cause many accidents in Texas. Someone might be guilty of distracted driving for the following reasons:
- Use of cell phones. This is a particularly common problem among teenage drivers. Texting and driving is one of the most deadly driving behaviors. More teens die from texting and driving than drunk driving. Passengers and bystanders are often the victims of this reckless behavior, and they or their families may need to work with a car accident lawyer to recover damages or file a wrongful death lawsuit.
- Radio. People who take their eyes off the road to adjust the volume or station on the car radio run the risk of losing control of their vehicles.
- Dropped items. Occasionally, drivers drop an item and attempt to pick it up while the car is moving. In doing so, they take their attention off the road.
- Looking at maps or GPS. It’s understandable that drivers may have concerns about whether they are taking the correct route to their destinations, but looking at a map or GPS while driving is a dangerous practice that can lead to collisions.
